"Butalist Mayan" ?
The Bayonette Trench Memorial near Verdun, France. The memorial itself is very moving and interesting but the shape of the architecture is very thought provoking. This gate was made in 1920. I find the shape to be reminiscent of the very famous Hollyhock House in Los Angeles, by Frank Lloyd-Wright. That shape is often ascribed to be "Mayan revival" , but I wonder if maybe it is more of a rif on art-deco and art nouveau motifs common in the 1920's. This massing seems to also presage the brutalist style that came on in the 1950-70 time period.
